Correspondence, legal and business documents and a few photographs relating to the genealogy of the McKinnon family of Edinburgh, Colonsay and Mull in Scotland and Erin Township and Guelph in Wellington County. 1860-

These family papers were gathered together by Robert Lachlan McKinnon. They had been in the possession of his uncle, Archibald McKinnon, (d.1912) Local Master of the Superior Court in Guelph, and many of them are concerned with attempts to recover the Russian estate of Catherine McKinnon (1778?-1858), a relative from the Island of Mull, Argyll, who was a nursery governess in the Imperial household of the czars Alexander I and Nicholas I. Robert L. McKinnon's grandfather, Lachlan McKinnon, was brother to the father of Professor Donald MacKinnon, the first chair of Celtic Languages at Edinburgh University.
